Who We Are
New Way Out is a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming the way our society prioritizes mental health issues. We are on a mission to ignite a culture of mental illness awareness and advocacy, lead both by compassion and science. We want the next generation to understand the drastic need for systemic change towards the way society cares for those suffering from mental health issues. Those suffering from mental health issues must be treated with a long-term plan in mind, with direct access to resources and compassionate care. This approach begins now, and it starts with New Way Out.
Did You Know…
In the state of California, there is no viable path of support for those are suffering with mental health issues. Due to a decrease in hospital beds, lack of funding for care centers, a shortage of psychiatrists, and strict HIPPA laws, those suffering with any form of affliction may find it extremely difficult to receive proper, long-lasting care.
22% of young adults have received mental health treatment in 2021. But this percentage only covers mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. 4% of the young adult population also suffers from chronic illnesses, such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or PTSD. Where is the treatment for individuals who are experiencing these types of illness?
They are often left out of the conversation.
Through our grassroots network, we strive to:
Mission + Vision
Holistic Mental Health Focus
New Way Out believes mental health issues cover a wide area of focus, ranging from anxiety to PTSD. No mental health issue should be ignored, especially for young adults. We believe that there is a drastic need for a complete education for mental illnesses that includes addressing medical, psychological, and sociological resources and solutions.
Destigmatization
Decades of social taboo and stigmatization has created an environment where many people don’t feel comfortable speaking about their own health struggles. It has also created an environment lacking compassion and empathy when discussing those struggling with serious mental health issues. We are committed to breaking the stigma.
Advocating for Policy Change
Although mental health advocacy has become a more mainstream conversation in recent years, New Way Out believes more can be done to reach and educate Californians about mental health resources. We seek to build an extensive network of California colleges and universities that have students who are committed to speaking out and advocating for change amongst their peers and at the state level.
Identify young adults who desire to be advocates on their college campuses and believe in promoting New Way Out’s mission
Educate advocates about traditional and emerging mental health issues that are on the rise in society, specifically for younger individuals
Promote mental health resources, conferences, and events to help young adults become more connected
Fundraise for mental health nonprofits and charities in the state that are making an impact in local communities
